SEO is moving into a different phase: not only optimizing to be cited or ranked, but also to become a place users actively seek out, stay in, and return to. For Vietnamese marketers, this is no longer just a purely technical story, but a change in how we think about the value of content, community, and search touchpoints.
- Key points:
- The SEO game is shifting from “being found” to “being chosen as a place to return to.”
- Platforms with strong communities want to keep users inside their own ecosystems, rather than serving only as data sources for search engines or AI.
- Google continues to affirm that it does not give special preference to any one platform, so lasting advantage still lies in the quality and usefulness of content.
- Marketers need to build content that can drive decisions, spark discussion, and retain users, rather than aiming only for a single click from search.
What’s happening
The most notable development from Reddit is its ambition to move beyond being a “reference source” and become a true “destination.” In its Q2 shareholder letter, Steve Huffman made it clear that Reddit is building a “daily destination,” not “drive-by traffic,” while the company also signaled its ambition to surface more evergreen content, reviews, and recommendations in the app. This shows that a platform that grew strongly on community-generated content now wants greater control over how users search and come back.
At the same time, Google is emphasizing the opposite: Reddit does not receive special preference in Search or in AI Search features. Looking closely at these two messages, we see an important truth about modern SEO: every platform wants to keep users within its own walls, but search algorithms are still said to operate based on quality and contextual relevance, not partnerships.
In that context, other changes across the Google and Bing ecosystems reflect the same trend: the search interface is gradually shifting toward a layered model, where content, ads, recommendations, and answers are reorganized to serve user intent faster. When search engines are no longer just a “list of links,” marketers can no longer optimize content as if every click goes straight to the website.
Why the advantage is shifting from rankings to return experience
The common thread between Reddit’s ambition and Google’s denial of favoritism is this: everyone is fighting to keep control of the journey. Reddit wants users to search, read, comment, and build trust inside its own platform; Google continues to insist that its system does not favor any specific source, including Reddit. As a result, SEO advantage is no longer just about whether you appear on the results page, but whether your content is strong enough to become a repeat choice.

This is especially important for review, comparison, how-to, and buying-advice content. When Huffman says Reddit is a good place for surfacing recommendations and reviews, he is indirectly pointing to a common need: users do not just want information, they want real experiences, real situations, and arguments trustworthy enough to make a decision. That is also where SEO meets brand trust.
MarTech has noted that tactical knowledge has a “half-life”: skills that were once highly valuable can quickly lose weight as technology changes. SEO is no different. Knowing a technical checklist is not enough if you do not understand how search behavior is being restructured by AI, integrated search apps, and community content models. The advantage increasingly belongs to marketers who can turn insight into a useful system, rather than simply optimizing individual pages.
SEO is now a race to build a content ecosystem, not just a landing page
As Reddit expands the surface area for reviews, recommendations, and in-app search, while Google adjusts policies and interfaces in areas such as Local Services and public-service-related ads, it is clear that search is moving deeper into the decision journey. That means a good result is no longer just a top-ranking article, but a cluster of content, experiences, and formats strong enough to keep users exploring.

For marketers, the consequence is that standalone content is increasingly hard to sustain as a durable advantage. A good but isolated article can easily be replaced by a better-structured content ecosystem: one with a pillar page, evergreen content, FAQs, real reviews, trust signals, and reasons for users to return. Reddit is trying to become that kind of ecosystem; Google is continuously refining how it distributes and displays signals from different ecosystems.
This also explains why larger platforms increasingly want to keep users inside the app. If users complete the journey within the platform, the platform controls behavioral data, monetization potential, and the access lifecycle. SEO therefore is no longer just about optimizing for crawlers, but also for the “retention experience” — meaning content that makes users trust, keep exploring, and come back.
A perspective for the Vietnamese market
For Vietnam, the lesson is not to copy Reddit or wait for Google’s favor, but to build content capabilities that can hold up across different search contexts. Vietnamese users search on Google, read communities, watch short videos, ask AI, and compare reviews before buying. If a brand’s content serves only one touchpoint, you lose your advantage as the journey becomes more fragmented.

This is an opportunity for sectors with long consideration cycles such as education, finance, beauty, technology, and local services. These industries do not just need SEO content with the right keywords; they need content that explains clearly, includes real experience, offers comparisons, and can build trust. In other words, effective SEO in Vietnam in the near future will look more like a reputation-building program than a traffic-hunting game.
Vietnamese marketers should also note one point: as platforms push more summarized answers, shallow content will find it even harder to hold traffic. Only content that is truly useful, has a point of view, includes evidence, and offers depth will give users enough reason to click, read carefully, and return.
What to do now

- Review the SEO content that is generating traffic but not repeat visits: any article that only attracts one-time clicks needs more depth, FAQs, reviews, or an applied perspective.
- Build topic clusters instead of optimizing each article in isolation: have a pillar piece, comparison pieces, explainer pieces, and real-world experience pieces to increase overall usefulness.
- Invest in trust signals for content: author identity, hands-on experience, clear source citations, specific examples, and regular updates.
- Design content for the behavior of “still wanting to continue after reading”: sensible internal linking, clear summaries, and answers deep enough that users do not need to search again immediately.
