SEO is moving through a role change: from optimizing for rankings to optimizing to be understood by AI, trusted by users, and ultimately chosen for purchase. For Vietnamese marketers, this affects not only traffic but also directly shapes how domains are chosen, how content is written, and how capability is proven at the purchase touchpoint.
Key points
- .com is still the most common, but new data shows other domain choices can deliver better commercial performance in some contexts.
- AI search is changing how queries are made, how answers are delivered, and how websites need to be organized to still appear.
- Search is increasingly tied to trust signals, buying behavior, and conversion capability, not just how much gets indexed.
- In Vietnam, SEO will need to be closer to product, data, and compliance rather than just a content team optimizing articles.
SEO is being pulled away from a pure ranking problem
Several signals at once show that SEO no longer operates like a one-way traffic race. Data compiled by Wix and cited by Search Engine Journal shows that .com still dominates, but some alternative domains are performing better commercially than expected, with .org recorded as having a 34% higher likelihood of generating ecommerce revenue than .com in the dataset the article referenced. At the same time, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is showing fewer PDF files in search results, even for queries that would normally go straight to source documents. Both signals point to the same thing: search systems are filtering differently than before, not just by page popularity.
On the AI search side, Search Engine Journal described how ChatGPT changed its web search calling method from a JSON payload to a more compact query language, while Google continues testing new display mechanisms such as carousels for developing topics. When the search interface layer changes, SEO is no longer just about “ranking on page one” but about which content and structures are clear enough for machines to understand and include in answers.
What is changing in SEO and AI search — and why marketing teams must work differently
This section is about mechanisms that have been verified: how queries work, how results are displayed, how performance is measured, and how conversion happens. Those elements are changing at the same time, so the SEO team cannot just fix individual pages one by one.
AI query language: content must be easier for machines to read, not just for people
ChatGPT’s shift from JSON to its own query language shows that AI search is optimizing in a fan-out style, prioritizing multiple queries at once and relevance signals rather than a single keyword string. Search Engine Journal’s analysis of ChatGPT rebuilt its search tool shows that the old metadata layer also disappeared, meaning SEO practitioners can no longer rely on old signals to infer how AI reads the web. That connects with Google’s data on AI Mode and developing-topic carousels: content only wins if it is clear enough for machines to separate topics, understand context, and choose the right answer fragment.

The result is that SEO needs to go deeper in page structure, entities, FAQ, headings, and supporting data. Not to “make it pretty for bots,” but to reduce the chance that AI misunderstands the page’s intent.
Commercial signals: domains and page types are starting to affect conversion trust
The case of .org having a higher likelihood of generating ecommerce revenue than .com in the Wix data cited by Search Engine Journal does not mean .org is always better than .com. But it does show that buyers and evaluation systems are not looking only at how familiar a domain feels. As .com still holds an advantage in many markets while local extensions also have a place, the SEO question expands into this: which domain best fits the trust, purpose, and transaction style the business is selling?

This is especially important for sectors in Vietnam that have both informational and conversion demand: education, healthcare, finance, SaaS. If a website is optimized only for clicks but lacks brand signals, legal signals, and credibility signals, SEO may generate traffic without necessarily generating revenue.
Conversion inside the SERP: when Google keeps users on the search screen
Google is testing multiple ways to bring buying and discovery behavior directly into results, from expanding direct booking for Local Services Ads to adding video creation with Gemini Omni in Google Ads. Although these features belong more to advertising than pure SEO, they point to a very clear direction: Google is increasingly flattening the journey from search to action. When booking, watching video, or making a decision can happen inside the search ecosystem, external websites must compete not only with rivals but also with the search interface itself.
For marketers, that forces SEO to move closer to conversion design. It is no longer enough to earn impressions; there must be a strong enough reason for users to still click, still trust, and still complete the action on the site.
Where SEO in Vietnam is likely to be pulled next
In Vietnam, this shift will hit hardest for businesses that treat SEO as a pure traffic growth channel. As Google tests new interfaces, AI search shortens the answer step, and domain data suggests trust signals may differ from old habits, SEO in the local market will need to be tied more tightly to three things: content origin, brand consistency, and post-click conversion ability.

For Vietnamese businesses, the question is not whether to choose .com or other domains based on instinct. It is necessary to look at the business model, target market, and the level of trust customers expect. For content sites, PDFs, downloadable documents, or landing pages, being shown less by Google in some formats may force the SEO team to rethink how information is packaged. For ecommerce sites, the more important question is: does the page have enough signals for both AI and users to recognize it as a place worth buying from?
If SEO still wants to generate revenue, it has to do these three things
- Review the domain, site structure, and brand signals to see whether they are helping or hurting conversion trust.
- Write content by topic cluster and search intent, not just by isolated keyword sets.
- Check how the site appears in AI search, carousels, and Google’s new result formats.
- Connect SEO with conversion, legal, and measurement data to know which traffic truly creates value.
If SEO is still managed like a ranking contest, it will keep getting weaker. If it is managed as a signal system that helps machines understand, people trust, and customers buy, it still has room to grow.
